Born Lawrence Harvey Zeiger on November 19, 1933, Larry King had long aspired to work in radio broadcasting. His desire for such a career led him to go to Miami where he landed his first job in radio. Initially doing cleaning and miscellaneous tasks, he was put on the air after an announcer suddenly quit. So on May 1, 1957, he had his first broadcast as a DJ.
His career further took off when, in 1978, he started hosting his own radio show, The Larry King Show, with a national broadcast until 1994. He attained greater fame when he started working on television with Larry King Live. Airing on CNN from 1985 to 2010, it was the network’s most watched and longest-running program.
King was admired for his approach when interviewing guests, which many considered to be direct but not confrontational. He had interviewed several prominent figures of his time, including Hillary Clinton, Vladimir Putin, George W. Bush, Al Gore, and Ross Perot. From politicians to authors to Hollywood A-listers, everybody sat for interviews.
After his work with CNN, he co-founded the production company Ora TV, which produced talk shows he also hosted until 2020 – Larry King Now and Politicking with Larry King. Apart from his work in radio and television broadcasting, he also ventured into writing and made cameo appearances on film and shows.
Throughout his career, King had conducted over 50,000 interviews. His versatility and knack for having worthwhile dialogues with his guests established him an iconic figure in hosting and broadcasting. On January 23, 2021, King died at the age of 87.
