These Elbert Hubbard quotes will teach you a thing or two about the importance of persistence and the strength of the mind that fuels it.
American writer, publisher, and philosopher Elbert Hubbard was born on June 19, 1856. Prior to becoming an accomplished author, he first worked as a salesman for the Larkin Soap Company. In 1895, he founded Roycroft, an Arts and Crafts community in East Aurora, New York. It was established as part of the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States.
He soon ventured into publishing with Roycroft Press where he edited and published the magazines The Philistine and The Fra. He became a prolific writer, releasing several publications. Among his most notable works were Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great and the essay A Message to Garcia.
His dedication to his work was not without repercussions. He was convicted of circulating “objectionable” materials violating postal laws at the beginning of World War I in 1913, though he received a pardon two years later. Wanting to leave the country, he boarded the RMS Lusitania on May 7, 1915 with his wife. He died that day when it was sunk by a German submarine. He received posthumous recognition, one with his essay A Message to Garcia being adapted into two films.
